How to draw a watermelon

There are many summer foods, such as ice cream and shaved ice, but in this article, I’ll show you how to draw a watermelon, a must eat fruit during the summer season.

 

Drafting

First of all, sketch the rough shape of the watermelon.

If you paint the watermelon in color without starting with a line drawing as shown below, make sure the shape is clean, since the rough outline is your best bet for the shape.

I recommend using colors outside red and green.

 

Draw the watermelon’s skin

Once you have a rough sketch, you can start painting the skin first.

The green color of the skin will look loose if it is light green, and dark green will make the watermelon look more realistic.

Paint the bottom of the watermelon with yellowish green or yellow between the skin and the fruit.

 

Draw the watermelon fruit (outside)

Once the green skin is painted, the next step is to paint the fruit inside the skin.

First I’ll paint about a third of the fruit in red.

Then I’ll blur the border between the bottom part painted in yellow-green and the red part of the fruit.

If you want to create a loose illustration, it is better not to blur the border.

In this case, I blurred the borderline between the yellow-green and red areas by using the fuzzy watercolor brush.

I blurred the bark part and the yellowish green part in the same way.

 

Drawing the watermelon’s fruit (center)

Once one-third of the fruit’s inside are painted with a dark red color, fill the remaining portions with a color lighter than the outer red.

You can use only one color of red for the fruit, but using two colors will make it look more transparent.

When the center is painted, blur the border like before.

The trick here is to add a dark red color in a radial pattern towards the center.

It is a good idea to blur it out a little bit to make it appear more delicious ☀︎.

 

Drawing the seeds

Now that the fruit is complete, let’s draw the seeds.

I purposely drew the seeds not in a straight line, but at a slight angle toward the center to make them look more natural.

In this case, I used a dark brown color to draw the seeds instead of pure black to give it a softer feel.

 

Draw the skin pattern

Once the seeds are drawn, we will draw the fruit patterns of the watermelon.

First, draw a single line in thick, dark green along the skin.

Once a single line is drawn, you can use a fine brush to add irregular shapes to create a watermelon pattern.

 

Adding Highlights & Shadows

The final touches include highlighting the seeds and berries and adding shadows to the peels to complete the process☀︎.
